Sparkling Moments at the Sparkle 7s Fundraising Event in 2023

"The Sparkle 7s fundraising event was a true testament to the power of community and compassion. It showcased what can be achieved when people come together for a common cause, making a tangible difference to the lives of others."

In September 2023, as a fresh addition to the Sparkle team, I was privileged to attend the Sparkle 7s fundraising event. I joined as a content strategist to help with digital projects and social media management so I was beyond excited to dive in and get involved with the 7s rugby event. From the moment I met the UK team in Essex, I could feel the energy and excitement buzzing in the air which reached its peak on Sunday when the event was held. Felsted School provided the perfect backdrop to such an amazing cause and the event ended up being a perfect mix of sportsmanship, community spirit and heartfelt giving.

The day was nothing short of spectacular. With a dedicated team of volunteers in Sparkle blue t-shirts, I got involved with various activities, from selling delicious cakes to helping with the sign-ins for the enthusiastic rugby teams ready to showcase their skills. The commitment, kindness and enthusiasm shown by everyone involved was truly inspiring.

The turnout was fantastic, with friends, families, and supporters gathering to cheer for their loved ones and favourite teams. The atmosphere was electric, filled with laughter and the spirit of friendly competition.

What made this event even more special was knowing that all the proceeds were going towards a noble cause. Sparkle's beneficiaries are the children and communities in Malawi, and witnessing the impact of our efforts firsthand has been incredibly heartwarming. As I became more involved in our marketing efforts, seeing photos and videos of the children and communities we support reinforced the importance of our mission and the difference we are making together.

As we look ahead, the Sparkle 7s rugby tournament is set to return this year on Saturday 3rd August in a brand new location, at the Colchester Rugby Club! I encourage all our readers to get involved in any way they can. Whether you're interested in signing up your rugby team or contacting a team you know, volunteering your time, or simply coming along to watch the matches and indulge in some delicious cake, every effort and donation will be a step towards creating brighter futures for the Sparkle kids and communities in Malawi.

Is There Hope for Vulnerable Communities in Malawi?

Sparkle's Clinic Transformation

Malawi is on the frontlines of global crises. Cyclone Deirdre, though less devastating than Cyclone Freddy, ripped off the roof of Sparkle Farm’s newly built toilet - a frustrating setback as we work toward sustainable feeding programmes. Adding to the strain, delayed rains now push planting seasons from December to late January, shrinking growing periods and increasing crop failure risks. With 80% of Malawians relying on agriculture, the situation is dire. Last year’s harvests already fell short, leaving many vulnerable to hunger. Ripple Effects of Global Conflicts Global conflicts amplify these challenges. Mozambique, once a food lifeline, is now hindered by insurgencies. The war in Ukraine has created fertiliser shortages, not just price hikes. With Ukraine being a key supplier, farmers in Malawi are unable to access critical agricultural inputs, further threatening yields. As aid is diverted to other global crises, like Palestine, African nations like Malawi are left struggling with fewer resources to tackle mounting issues. Climate Change and Inequality Climate change compounds the crisis. Though Malawi contributes less than 0.1% to global emissions, it’s among the top 10 most climate-vulnerable countries. Cyclones, floods, and droughts are increasingly frequent, forcing communities into a relentless cycle of rebuilding. In rural areas, a lack of knowledge about sustainable practices leaves farmers using the same overworked land year after year, depleting soil quality and further reducing crop productivity.
